Natural Skin Care with Kathryn Grounds holistic skin therapist and beautician

Becca Crawford

Dear YL Members,

Your skin is the largest organ in our body and a huge part of our detox system! Before switching to natural I am sure many of us know the detox symptoms that can appear, sensitivity, rash, eczema, acne, psoriasis. As always Young Living is here to support you and Kathryn Grounds, holistic skin therapist and beautician shares with us her key tips on skincare and her go to starter bundle oils to really amplify your skin health.

the 4 skincare basics:

Cleanse:
With an appropriate cleanser for your skin needs. In the evening, I recommend double cleansing. First with a cleansing oil to emulsify and lift all makeup, sunscreen, and environmental toxic particles from the skin (second-hand smoke, aerosols, car fumes etc), followed if needed by a gentle gel/foaming cleanser like art or bloom. In the morning you can rinse with water and a face washer and forgo cleansing all together or cleanse once using your cleanser of choice.

Hydrate: Hydration is essential for skin health and often overlooked, conventional cosmetics suck moisture from the skin and leave it parched. Many people mistake dehydrated skin for ‘dry’ skin and add a rich moisturizer prematurely. Hydration is what allows your natural oils to come to the surface and protect your skin as intended. Using a Hydrosol and/or the bloom essence with salt based hyaluronic acid is an amazingly effective hydrator for all skin types of all ages.

Address concern: This is optional but the most targeted treatment. This is about treating that thing that is bugging you in the mirror with active ingredients. Be it fine lines, dehydration, tired eyes, tight skin, or dark spots or acne. There are many amazing Young Living products to address all these concerns but to tailor them to you I recommend talking to your holistic beauty and health practitioner.

Protect: The final step has an optional 2 parts moisturizer followed by mineral sunscreen. Again, a moisturizer is best tailored for you, and it is optional to top this with the Young Living mineral non-nanoparticle zinc sunscreen. Moisturiser is essential as YL make sure to pack their blends with essential fatty acids to protect you from moisture loss, soften dead skin and increase your glow (to name a few benefits!). Though I do recommend you get a good dose of early morning or later afternoon sun if you are prone to burning as vitamin D is also essential to our skin and body wellness.

Your starter bundle contains some amazing skin simplifying oils to get you started.

Lemon or Orange to your evening moisturizer can help boost skin glow and are fantastic for helping healthy sebum balance.

Lavender and peppermint oils added to your morning or evening moisturizer cool and sooth red skin, calm irritation and help ward off P-Acne bacteria.

Frankincense morning and/or evening promotes optimum skin health and helps prevent collagen breakdown I love adding this to a carrier oil like rosehip or jojoba and apply after hydrating for a dose of fat soluble vitamins.

Stress away is a great face blend added to your AM routine to help fight free radical damage, sooth and hydrate skin and prevent inflammation.

In the meantime here are Kathryn’s top tips and top 3 products!

Kathryn's top tips:

  • Do not cut the fat in your diet or in your oils. Our cells use fat to protect them from DNA damage and the essential fatty esters in YL oils are an integral part of their potency and stability to potent permanent damage to skin from synthetic fragrances.

  • Skin type – the greatest marketing myth. YL has recommendations but does not categorize their products by ‘skin type’. The skin is an organ and simply wants to be in homeostasis with health internally and externally.

  • Go natural with your skincare. The industry is unregulated and many harsh toxic ingredients such as colours, preservatives and nano particles pollute our products as cosmetics do not need to be tested or proven safe before sale. Women apply over 500 of these chemicals a day disrupting their hormones and compromising our health, and they have now proven that approximately as much as 60% of the western male population are suffering from infertility as a result of the same compounds.
